Analogical reasoning

compares the similarities between two concepts, systems or objects to draw conclusions about what is likely to be true about the new concept, system or object. Examples of analogical reasoning include James Clerk Maxwell’s discovery of electromagnetism: by comparing similarities between earlier work on magnetic and electric fields and equations used to calculate flows of liquids, he was able to explain how magnetic lines of force behave.
