Définition
Un photodétecteur convertit la puissance ou l’énergie de la lumière entrante par l’absorption de photons et la conversion en courant électrique. Ce dispositif est utilisé dans différentes applications. Par exemple, dans un appareil photo, la lumière est convertie en signal électrique et ce dernier est amplifié et numérisé afin d’obtenir un pixel. Chaque pixel de l’image correspond à un photodétecteur qui reçoit de l’information d’intérêt.
Un autre exemple se trouve dans le domaine de la communication optique où il sert à détecter le signal optique qui transporte l’information, pour ensuite générer un courant représentant l’intensité du signal optique (appelé photocourant).

A photodetector is a component which converts the power or energy of incoming light by photon absorption and conversion to electric current. This device is used in different applications. In a camera, for instance, light is converted into an electrical signal, which is amplified and digitized to produce a pixel. Each pixel in the image corresponds to a photodetector, which receives information of interest.
Another example is in the field of optical communication where it is used to detect the optical signal that carries information and generates a current (photocurrent) representing the optical signal intensity.
