Les modulateurs électroabsorbant sont un type de modulateur optique qui peut moduler l’intensité lumineuse sur la base de l’effet Franz-Keldysh. Cet effet représente le changement des caractéristiques d’absorption (par exemple, le spectre d’absorption) d’un matériau en raison de l’application d’un champ électrique externe.
Plus précisément, le champ électrique appliqué peut modifier l’énergie de la bande interdite, ce qui entraîne une modification de l’énergie des photons à absorber.
Ainsi, le matériau peut devenir plus transparent à certains photons (c’est-à-dire ceux dont l’énergie est inférieure à la bande interdite).

Electroabsorption modulators are a type of optical modulator that can modulate the light intensity based on the Franz-Keldysh effect. This effect represents the change in the absorption characteristics (e.g., absorption spectrum) of a material due to an applied external electric field.
More specifically, the applied electric field can change the bandgap energy resulting in an alteration of the photon energy to be absorbed. Hence, the material can become more transparent to certain photons (i.e., the ones which has an energy below the bandgap).
