La distribution contagieuse de Rutherford a été inspirée par le modèle de l'urne de Pólya, dont elle découle naturellement. La distribution, construite sur les travaux antérieurs de Woodbury, concerne la probabilité d'un succès à tout essai qui dépend linéairement du nombre de succès précédents.
