Définition
L’accélérateur photonique désigne un élément de base de l’ordinateur photonique qui réduit la charge de l’unité centrale de traitement en s’occupant de tâches de traitement spécifiques, comme les tâches d’une unité de traitement graphique ou d’un accélérateur d’intelligence artificielle. Les opérations rapides de multiplication et d’accumulation sont considérées comme les tâches de traitement fondamentales des accélérateurs photoniques récents. Ils sont capables de permettre un calcul numérique rapide et économe en énergie.

A photonic accelerator is a core-enabling building block of photonic computing. In general, an accelerator’s function is to reduce the load of the central processor unit by taking care of some specific processing tasks such as the tasks of a graphical processing unit or an artificial intelligence accelerator. Performing fast multiply-and-accumulate operations are considered as the fundamental processing tasks of recent photonic accelerators. They can enable power-efficient and fast optical (photonic) computing.
