Définition
Un modulateur électroabsorbant désigne un type de modulateur optique qui peut moduler l’intensité lumineuse sur la base de l’effet Franz-Keldysh. Cet effet représente le changement des caractéristiques d’absorption, comme le spectre d’absorption d’un matériau en raison de l’application d’un champ électrique externe.
Ainsi, le matériau peut devenir plus transparent à certains photons, soit ceux dont l’énergie est inférieure à la bande interdite.

Electro-Absorption Modulator is a type of optical modulator that can modulate the light intensity based on the Franz-Keldysh effect. This effect represents the change in the absorption characteristics (e.g. absorption spectrum) of a material due to an applied external electric field.
Hence, the material can become more transparent to certain photons (i.e. the ones which have an energy below the band gap).
